First, we must understand that the word “law” can refer to different things. It can refer to the moral law, which is our understanding of right and wrong given to us by God. This is also known as the Ten Commandments. The law can also refer to the ceremonial law, which are the rules and regulations surrounding Jewish religious ceremonies and practices. Finally, the law can refer to the civil law, which are the laws governing human behavior in society.
When we read that Jesus came to fulfill the law, we must determine which type of law He is referring to. In Matthew 5:17-19, Jesus says,”Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.” Here, it is clear that Jesus is referring to the moral law – He has come to fulfill it, not abolish it.
But what does it mean when Jesus says He has come to “fulfill” the law? This doesn’t mean that Jesus simply obeyed all of its rules and regulations perfectly. Rather, He fulfilled the deeper purpose of the law – He showed us how we can live in harmony with God’s will. In doing so, He made it possible for us to be forgiven and have eternal life (John 3:16).
